PRIORITIZATION SCALE - THREE LEADING COMMUNITY PROBLEMS
The first number used for our scale is how big of a problem it is for the community. The second number is the best estimation of the community's ability to solve the problem, with the support of partners, including help from nurses. Each of the numbers is derived from a numerical scale of 1-10. They are then multiplied together for each criterion to establish the problems priority
The prioritization scale was developed to establish the three priority problems based on the population in Roxborough. Pedestrian safety ranked as the highest priority problem for a number of reasons. Some of these include, the resident's awareness of the issues and determination to better their community. Another reason, pedestrian safety is the priority community problem is because the city of Philadelphia is aware of the problem and has implemented "Drive Right, Ride Right, Walk Right" with special considerations in Roxborough since the community does not have adequate side walks and cross walks.
The community members have a great deal of awareness regarding pedestrian safety and are highly motivated to resolve the problem. The nurse's ability to influence this problem is lower since a nurse cannot directly relate to pedestrian safety. However, the nurse can be a resource for safety education. The city of Philadelphia has implemented an appropriate program to help better the situation. Although the expertise is available to solve this problem, the city of Philadelphia is large and it is unsure when the focus will be on Roxborough. If the problem is not fixed, it poses safety hazards to residents of the community, placing them in danger when they are out and about in Roxborough. This problem can be fixed relatively quickly once all of the programs and plans are in place. One barrier to fixing the problem quickly is that there is no definite time for when the initiatives for change will be implemented in the community.
